AEIOU Cafe – King George’s Avenue

An eclectic cafe that is housed in an old shop house is indeed a rare sight. We took some time to find the place as it is housed under the board ‘Oriental Antique House’. That being said, one just cannot miss the lights in the evening which hang on the entrance of this cafe. Situated in King George’s Avenue is the vibrant AEIOU cafe whose vowel-dominant name symbolizes all about going back to basics. The interior of the cafe is filled with quirky art and unique decor that is quite eye-catching.

The theme of the cafe focuses on simple living and hence there was a corner consisting of upcycled stuff and mugs for sale. The wall is adorned with paintings made by local artists.

The Orders
For starters, we ordered the ‘Sticks for Comfort’ which was a plate consisting of root vegetable fries. It was a colorful plate filled with yam, purple yam, sweet potato and potato along with a salsa dip. Some of these vegetables were intriguing in the form of fries and were quite soft and tasty.

For the mains, I decided to go the nutritious way by going for ‘Pum King and Queen of Grains’ which had pumpkin and quinoa as the star ingredients. The pumpkin was well glazed and roasted along with pickled cucumbers and baby radishes. The quinoa had a nice balance of sweet with some raisins and almond flakes. Visually, it was quite appealing and taste-wise, it was quite filling.

Next we ordered the ‘Bravo Ravo’ which was their ravioli pasta offering. The ricotta lemon cream was too tangy and the dish was just not balanced on the whole with the tomato sauce lacking salt. This dish turned out to be disappointing.

To top off our meal, we felt like having a drink and ordered the ‘Hot Chocolate with a dash of Cinnamon’. This was quite refreshing and good and it was a pretty sight to see the sprinkle of cinnamon across the flat white surface.

It was impressive to see quite a few vegetarian options on the menu of a quirky and vintage cafe. For their interesting decor, for their simple menu, for their friendly service and a different feel, Aeiou cafe is worth a visit if you are in the area.

Quarter to Three [Permanently Closed]

A good dessert place is a place that makes you smile – no matter how the meal was. Quarter to Three is a small and cozy café situated in Tanjong Pagar. Wooden furniture always catches my attention and I really liked the broad table where we were seated. The display counter was well-lit and adorned with cakes, cookies and desserts in a jar.

The menu was of the size of an examination writing pad and had everything clearly stated. As you can see, some of the names are quite interesting.

The Orders
As chocolate fanatics, we first ordered the cake called ‘Happiness is a Warm Gun’. This cake was soft and we just dug into it immediately. The taste of coffee did not overpower the taste of chocolate and it was a sinful delight to eat.

The desserts displayed in a jar definitely seemed worth trying and so we decided to try ‘Panna Cotta in a Jar’ in both the strawberry and mango flavors. The texture was cream-like, rich and smooth and I could taste the flavors clearly. They gave us a sample cookie with the Panna Cotta. These cookies are available for sale.

The final dessert that we tried was the ‘Crème brûlée with Biscuit ‘ which had a rich custard base. This can easily be shared by two people.

The place also has their own Artisan Breads section which serves baguettes, focaccia and ciabatta breads. They also customize cakes for special occasions. For the tasty desserts, for the friendly staff and for the wallet-friendly prices, this place is totally worth a visit. Signing off on a sweet note by wishing all the deelightful readers a very Happy Diwali…

Drury Lane

The café culture is definitely on the rise in Singapore. The neighbourhood cafés act as a place to catch up with friends on weekdays. Families can get together over special weekend brunches. One such café that has sprung up is Drury Lane situated in Tanjong Pagar. It was a little difficult to find the café as there was no visible signboard. It is actually a two-storey shophouse. For those who want a landmark – it is a distinctly red-colored café on that road. The lower floor is generally used for quick bites whereas the upper storey is for casual conversations. We headed there for dinner, and the first thing that struck me as I entered the upper storey was the interesting décor comprising of wooden tables and crates recycled as stools. The tables are wide and will remind you of the old college canteens. Orders are placed on the lower floor and you typically carry a glass carrying your order number – and an interesting message.

Sufficient water was provided in a large bottle. In these times when water is charged at certain places, places where water is free receive brownie points from me.

The Orders

My friend ordered ’94 Goes Green’ which was the part of All-Day breakfast menu. It was a decent sized meal. The baked beans and avocado acted as good complements to the whole meal. The tomato relish which came as a side could have been much better.

I decided to go for the ‘Veggie Sandwich’. Unfortunately, it was too small in size to act as a main for dinner. The sandwich could do better in terms of striking a balance between the leafy and non-leafy vegetables. The taste was strictly ok and could do with some flavor enhancement.

We did not got for the coffee or muffins, but the place does have an interesting range of brews and muffins at affordable prices. I intend to head there one time just to taste them. I also noticed that since there is low cellular signal availability, they have free wi-fi. If you want to laze around, catch up on some decent conversation and want some place for a quick gathering / caffeine fix, then Drury lane is definitely worth a visit.

Strangers’ Reunion

Sometimes it’s just not about lunch and dinner, it’s about chitchat and coffee. Strangers’ Reunion , a cozy café nestled away in one of the streets in Outram Park is a place that caters to this idea. The café has expanded now and has comfortable furniture that makes you want to sit and stay. When you go with friends to such a café, it is indeed more the merrier as you get to savor more dessert varieties.
The Orders

We first ordered the ‘Mocha’ which was so visually pleasing that it could right away be termed as quality latte art on display. If you are a coffee connoisseur, do try this.

We then moved on to the desserts. They have some interesting cakes on display at the counter and we wanted to try different varieties. I had heard about their trademark buttermilk waffles and went right away to order the Buttermilk Waffles with Vanilla Ice cream and fruits. Their waffles were thick and fluffy and had the right amount of crunchiness as you bit into it. The Greek artisan yogurt waffle combination is also recommended.

Some desserts can be sinful delights. The ‘Coffee Cream Cheesecake’ turned out to be exactly that. A good balance of chocolate and coffee meant that it did not leave a lingering bitter taste in the mouth. Highly recommended.

What drew us to the cafe was the interesting name but what kept us there were the brilliant desserts. Do bear in mind that the desserts were NOT eggless. I am a vegetarian but I do not mind eggs in desserts.
