Veggie Story Cafe – Best Vegetarian Cafe in Johor Bahru

Crossing the border for a JB food marathon usually means hunting down local food staples – but who says plant-based eats can’t steal the show? Tucked away just a short drive from the Causeway checkpoint in Taman Pelangi is Veggie Story cafe, the best vegetarian cafe in Johor Bahru.
The cafe combines light wood accents and soft lighting to create a clean and inviting dining space. Above all, the decor elements highlight kindness to animals.

The menu showcases a wide array of plant-based dishes that will leave you unquestionably surprised. It’s an extensive menu spanning a broad range of Western and Asian cuisines – from hearty grain bowls to exquisite plant-based renditions of classic favorites. At Veggie Story Cafe, they believe in the power of food to nourish both the body and the soul.
The vegan items are clearly indicated on the menu. Here are the list of items we ordered from an almost 15 page menu of vegetarian dishes:

If you love a good bowl of mala, make this soup your top order. In the Mala Creamy Soup Ramen, the traditional fiery Sichuan spices are blended into a rich and milk-infused broth. It is loaded with chewy ramen noodles, shimeji mushrooms and plant-based protein. This is a punchy and spicy bowl but not overpowering, be sure to order an iced beverage on the side.

The Crispy Lemongrass Golden Mushroom is one of Veggie Story Cafe’s best creations. They transform thick Lion’s Mane mushrooms into addictive, golden-fried bites seasoned with fragrant lemongrass. The garnish of curry leaves on the top enhances this dish undoubtedly. The texture is crunchy like fritters and leaves you wanting for more.

Instead of serving laksa like a bowl of noodle soup, the cafe elevates the dish into a bento-styled meal set. This set is served with fragrant rice and a side of crisp pickled veggies (achar) to cut through the richness. In addition, the curry is flavorful and does not compromise on the authentic Nanyang taste.

Veggie Story Cafe elevates this Thai staple by serving it piping hot in a claypot. In essence, the heat retention allows you to savor the flavours of the dish throughout the meal. The curry is loaded with all the vegetables that especially go into making a Thai green curry. It has a gentle and aromatic warmth that makes it a deeply comforting dish.

The Multi-Green Tofu Claypot is pure, unpretentious comfort food in a pot. It consists of silken tofu with abundant green vegetables and mushrooms in a light and savory broth. This particularly tastes like a detox bowl of goodness.

We tried the Rose Coffee and Honey Milk at Veggie Story Cafe. The iced versions are better, especially considering the weather. If you like a floral twist in your coffee, then you must try Iced Rose Coffee,
The cafe serves generous, shareable portions at incredibly reasonable prices, making it ideal for family dining. If you are looking for the best vegetarian cafe in Johor Bahru, then Veggie Story Cafe should be a part of your food trail.
