Noshery by Nosh – Rochester Park [Permanently Closed]

The upscale restaurant Nosh has been around for years in the quiet enclave of Rochester Park. The more casual version of this restaurant is the relatively new space, Noshery which is a cafe by day and a bar by night. With this extension, Nosh has embraced the all-day dining concept. The cafe is an idyllic getaway that’s reminiscent of a cabin in a hill station. Decked out in wood, greenery seems to be the theme of this cafe – from wall motifs to the potted plants adorning the tables. I like this kind of setting for a weekend brunch as it enables an intimate dining conversation. The view from our table was this outdoor patio that gave a sense of instant calm. This space would also be perfect for small private events.

The Orders
If you go for a brunch, make the calories count! And so we ordered the ‘French Fries’ to start the meal. The portion size was huge and that was a welcome sight when the dish of fries was placed on the table. These fries were long and thin and had a crispy texture. The thick ketchup on the side went well with the fries.

I love ordering salads if I can visualize them to be colorful. The description on the menu helps me to determine if my interest is sufficiently piqued to try it. I chose the ‘Pesto Salad’ in the same manner. The salad was simple just with four ingredients – tomatoes, Romaine lettuce, mozzarella and pesto. The simplicity turned out to be the best part as the generous use of pesto brought all the ingredients together and made it a very tasty dish. The quality of the ingredients was top-notch. Highly recommended.

My husband ordered the ‘Shakshouka’ which is a Middle Eastern dish. Tomatoes are the backbone of shakshouka and the only common thing across variations of this dish. The peppers had a touch of crunch and the onions were soft and folded wonderfully into the sauce. The eggs were correctly soft cooked and the yolks added a touch of richness. The only disappointing parts of the dish were the eggplant fritters. Thankfully, they are served separately and don’t affect the dish itself.

Thirst quenchers are always welcome to beat the humidity of Singapore. I found the mention of ‘Yellow Watermelon Juice’ to be intriguing. To begin with, it tastes quite different from the red watermelon. This juice was refreshing but had a bitter note at the end, maybe because of the rind. So as the juice came to room temperature, the bitterness was more pronounced. Hence I have mixed feelings about the juice – refreshing but not instantly appealing.

With its scenic locale and eclectic mix of delicious food, Noshery is a lovely hideout. Its ideal for midday catch-ups and a good conversation. Head there for this long weekend maybe? On that note, wishing all of you a very Happy New Year! Thank you for reading this blog filled with vegetarian rants and also patiently waiting for new posts.

Guzman Y Gomez – Star Vista

When Australia’s popular Mexican joint opened their third outlet in the West and had opening hours till dinner time, I was elated! Yes, I am talking about Guzman Y Gomez, a Mexican Taqueria situated in Star Vista mall. Bustling with people and a trademark Mexican festive atmosphere, this joint perfectly sets the mood for the evening. Before I start to write about the food, I must share with you that this place has secured the top spot in my quest for good Mexican food. The menu is interesting and it has perfect meal combination sets at affordable prices. The service staff suggest the optimum upsized meal options and guide you efficiently. Impressive right from the start, I must say.

The Orders
A Mexican meal without Nachos or tortillas seems kind of incomplete. We ordered the ‘Corn Chips’ which are crisp and well-salted. Their guacamole dip (ordered separately) acts as a nice complement to the chips.

There are three choices of mains available at GYG: Burritos, tacos and quesadillas. Their ‘Burrito Bowl’ is one of my favourites. It consists of black beans, bell peppers, onions and guacamole. I go for an upsize of veggies which they provide in generous portions. This makes it a bigger bowl so that 2 pax can share it which makes it a steal. Also the freshness of the ingredients enhances the quality of the dish. Highly recommended.

I also ordered the ‘Veg Quesadillas’ as the other main dish. The newspaper print makes their food pop, increasing the Mexican feel of the place. You can choose to take 2 or 3 pieces in your dish. The cheesy effect merged with the fillings makes this a delicious offering. If you like a kick in terms of the sauce, go for their medium spicy or highly spicy sauce. Note that they offer 3 types of salsas, onions, and jalapenos as self service at no extra charge.

Just for the sake of trying a Mexican soda, I ordered the ‘Jarritos Mandarin’ soda. Though the fizz is lesser than the other aerated counterparts, I found it a bit too sweet for my liking. Spotting the 100% sugar label on the bottle after ordering certainly did not help.

If you work in CBD, you probably already know about GYG. The Star Vista outlet has both indoor and patio seating and is generally crowded. So arrive a bit early to get seats or order a takeaway and sit and eat on Star Vista steps and watch some performance. For its quality Mexican offerings, for quick service and for its wallet-friendly prices, Guzman Y Gomez is worth a sureshot visit!

Long Black Cafe – Biopolis

Biopolis is predominantly a workplace area. There are however, quite a few eating joints here that deserve your attention. On a friend’s recommendation, I reached Long Black Cafe to try their food. The cafe serves Western cuisine at affordable prices and has an extensive menu with diverse items. They are pretty crowded during lunch, but if you reach a little after 3 pm, you will find the place to be calm. The alfresco seating is well laid out and you can catch up on a book or just enjoy a nice breeze and the space. This is a good place to chill-out with friends (or even if you are alone) in the off-peak hours.

The Orders
In the mains, there are limited options for vegetarians. They have bruschetta and mushroom sandwich in the mains. I ordered the ‘Aglio Olio Classic’ pasta which was well-made. The spaghetti was cooked al-dente and served with a garnish of parsley and chilli. The chilli had a kick to it and hence the pasta had a spicy bite. It turned out to be a good option to order at this cafe.

The hot weather and such a relaxing ambiance demanded a cold beverage. The ‘Strawberry Fizzy’ fit the bill perfectly. Refreshing, with a slight hint of mint, this drink was perfectly balanced. I also liked the fact that it was not extremely fizzy.

If you are a fan of chilled espresso, then their iced lattes were good. I tried the ‘Iced Hazelnut Latte’ which was sweet and tasty. It was a pleasant sip to break away from the day’s work.

Coffee breaks get enhanced with sweet bites like this ‘Carrot Cake’. Beneath this unpretentious appearance there were layers of moistness in this lightly spiced cake. It was a delectable dessert and hence stands highly recommended.
