Burma Social – Burmese restaurant with ample vegetarian options on Tras Street

Think of an aesthetically designed shophouse spread across two floors on Tras street, serving an ode to Burma’s culinary culture in Singapore and you will find Burma Social. This multi-cultural restaurant showcases a menu titled Feast of the Six Kingdoms which encompasses the Pan-Asian flavors of Burma, China, India, Thailand, Laos and Bangladesh.

The extensive menu comprises wok and fried starters, dimsums, main courses, desserts and some interesting cocktails.

Kang Kong Friiters
Kang Kong Fritters at $18

Kangkong leaves are similar to watercress or spinach with tender shoots and edible stems. When fried in tempura style, they can be made into a crunchy starter and this dish was done well. The tamarind sauce on the side complemented the fritters.

Spicy Aubergine Fusion
Radiant Spicy Aubergine Fusion at $18

The Laotioan-inspired aubergine offering is a rustic yet comforting dish. The smoked and grilled effect makes it a good accompaniment for rice. The dish also has spicy chilli, but I did not find it to be very hot.

Spicy Edamame
Spicy Edamame at $12

If you are hungry and need a quick dish, then order the spicy edamame! Coated in chilli garlic sauce, the dish catered to our hunger in seconds.

Thai Red Curry
Thai Red Curry at $26

For the mains, one of the dishes I tried was the Thai red curry. It was filled with vegetables and creamy indulgence but lacked the authentic aromas of the dish.

Curry Pyazzo
Curry Pyazzo at $28

Curry Pyazzo brings a touch of India to Burma Social in terms of ingredients used in the dish. For those familiar with Indian cuisine, the closest dish to imagine would be Kadhi Pakora. The Indian herb infused curry was served with onion fritters, black chickpeas and crispy crackers. This dish was wholesome and can be shared by 2 pax.

I found the desserts to be their weakest course in terms of their offerings since at the time I visited they mainly had ice creams. Post my visit, I noticed that they have added a variety of new desserts to their menu

Overall, for trying a different cuisine and its vegetarian options, or an evening out with friends, Burma Social is definitely worth a visit.
