Acapulco Mexican Bistro and Bar – Telok Ayer

After office hours, the busy Robinson Road turns into a convenient spot to relax and unwind. Filled with watering holes and restaurants offering a variety of cuisines, people have umpteen options to head to for a nice meal and drinks. In this stretch is Acapulco Bistro and Bar, a restaurant which specializes in authentic Mexican cuisine. The restaurant is small but has a festive atmosphere and an awesome live band that plays on Fridays. If you like good food along with classic English songs, head here right away!

The Orders
The menu is filled with handcrafted, traditional dishes from Mexico and the whole vibe of the restaurant lends itself to make it feel like a home-cooked meal. All the main Mexican dishes like tacos, burritos and quesadillas have vegetarian options, hence there is no hassle while placing the order. First, we ordered the ‘Burrito Bowl’ and directly sprung into the main course. Burritos are all well and good but sometimes you just don’t want to deal with the messy and tearing sides of the tortilla wraps. This burrito bowl was served with Mexican rice accompanied by capsicum, tomato, onions, pico de gallo and melted cheddar cheese. This flavoursome bowl with well spiced veggies has you covered for a delicious meal.

If you want to simplify your ordering process and not think too much, then most of the times you can rely on ‘Veg Fajitas’ for a quick and easy meal. They offer the Norteno Fajitas which is nothing but Tex-Mex, a blend of styles born from the Norteno border of Mexico and Southwestern border of the US. In this version, the veggies were seasoned to perfection and served along with a flour tortilla. The guacamole and sour cream on the side brought the whole dish together making it tasty mouthfuls of goodness for me.

Since I was not in the mood for cocktails, I went for the ‘Apple Juice’. Refreshing, crisp, and light – a glass to enjoy while soaking in the music.

I have tasted many veg quesadillas in Singapore at various restaurants. Most of them have stringy cheese oozing out of them along with some veggies as fillings. All you can taste in these is the cheese. In Acapulco’s ‘Veg Quesadillas’, you can actually taste the (generously filled) veggies which is such a welcome change for a vegetarian like me. The melted cheese, chopped jalapeno, sour cream, pico de gallo and guacamole made for perfect dipping for these absolutely well-made quesadillas. Highly recommended.

A special mention to the live band – https://www.facebook.com/Clique-The-Groovy-People-369261880123695/ who were absolutely fabulous. For their authentic Mexican taste, use of loads of veggies in their dishes and friendly vibe, Acapulco Mexican Bistro and Bar is a must-visit.

Guzman Y Gomez – Star Vista

When Australia’s popular Mexican joint opened their third outlet in the West and had opening hours till dinner time, I was elated! Yes, I am talking about Guzman Y Gomez, a Mexican Taqueria situated in Star Vista mall. Bustling with people and a trademark Mexican festive atmosphere, this joint perfectly sets the mood for the evening. Before I start to write about the food, I must share with you that this place has secured the top spot in my quest for good Mexican food. The menu is interesting and it has perfect meal combination sets at affordable prices. The service staff suggest the optimum upsized meal options and guide you efficiently. Impressive right from the start, I must say.

The Orders
A Mexican meal without Nachos or tortillas seems kind of incomplete. We ordered the ‘Corn Chips’ which are crisp and well-salted. Their guacamole dip (ordered separately) acts as a nice complement to the chips.

There are three choices of mains available at GYG: Burritos, tacos and quesadillas. Their ‘Burrito Bowl’ is one of my favourites. It consists of black beans, bell peppers, onions and guacamole. I go for an upsize of veggies which they provide in generous portions. This makes it a bigger bowl so that 2 pax can share it which makes it a steal. Also the freshness of the ingredients enhances the quality of the dish. Highly recommended.

I also ordered the ‘Veg Quesadillas’ as the other main dish. The newspaper print makes their food pop, increasing the Mexican feel of the place. You can choose to take 2 or 3 pieces in your dish. The cheesy effect merged with the fillings makes this a delicious offering. If you like a kick in terms of the sauce, go for their medium spicy or highly spicy sauce. Note that they offer 3 types of salsas, onions, and jalapenos as self service at no extra charge.

Just for the sake of trying a Mexican soda, I ordered the ‘Jarritos Mandarin’ soda. Though the fizz is lesser than the other aerated counterparts, I found it a bit too sweet for my liking. Spotting the 100% sugar label on the bottle after ordering certainly did not help.

If you work in CBD, you probably already know about GYG. The Star Vista outlet has both indoor and patio seating and is generally crowded. So arrive a bit early to get seats or order a takeaway and sit and eat on Star Vista steps and watch some performance. For its quality Mexican offerings, for quick service and for its wallet-friendly prices, Guzman Y Gomez is worth a sureshot visit!

Potbellies (Now known as Lee Tai Fu)

There are some streets in Singapore that are stacked with restaurants and the same is true with Kim Tian Road. Situated in Tiong Bahru, is a small restaurant called Potbellies that will transport you to the ’70s with its decor and ambiance. The name was intriguing and my doubts about the food were put to rest when I read their menu and came across the story behind the fascinating name. The place was filled with loads of heart, right from the salt ‘n’ pepper shakers, to the owner who personally attended to us promptly. Some things that interested me are what I have captured in the picture.

The Orders
To set the tempo for a good meal, we ordered the Soup of the Day which happened to be the ‘Tomato Soup’. The soup comes in a small portion and is sufficient only for a single person. We were not that bowled over by the soup as it lacked seasoning and was quite thin.

For the mains, we went for the ‘Vegetarian Burrito’ which definitely made up for the disappointing soup course. The burrito was huge and had a good combination of beans, veg, cheese and rice. The rice was well-seasoned and every bite was filled with a burst of taste. It is served with some tortilla chips and salsa on the side.

Next we ordered the ‘Vegetarian Quesadilla’ which was filled with loads of cheese and vegetables. All their dishes were generous with cheese and you have to forget counting calories at this place. On the whole, the taste of the dish was good and came with the same sides as the burrito. Personally, I preferred the burrito.

When you forget your waistline for sometime, it is imperative to try the desserts without any guilt. So we decided to go for the ‘Classic Breakfast Waffle’ which was delicious. Filled with a layer of butter between crunchy waffles and a scoop of ice cream on the top, this dessert just melted in the mouth.

On the owner’s recommendation, we decided to try the ‘Pistachio Crunch’ which was extremely tasty. It had a crunchy base with a chocolate drizzle on it along with a large scoop of ice cream. The dessert course was a befitting end to this warm place.

They also have deals going on for kids and birthday month promos. The service was very nice and we were well attended to by the owner who also told us that this restaurant was opened by the earlier Heart of House management. Water is available on self-service basis. For a nice evening with family and friends in an old-world charm atmosphere, for good food without wanting to watch that weight, Potbellies is worth a visit.
