Yellow Cab Pizza Co – Citylink Mall

Pizza fans can rejoice as Yellow Cab Pizza Co have opened their first outlet in Singapore. Situated in the busy Citylink Mall, this joint serves New York-style pizzas and is quite visible with a signature yellow and black colored board. The restaurant is styled in a quirky manner with metal furnishings and using black and white as the primary colors. The traffic signal wall seems to make a statement like ‘Your pizza will be worth your wait’. They have an interesting promo running on weekdays during lunch time. For 2 pax – any 10″ pizza + full pasta + 2 sodas at $25 which is steal deal.

Their menu clearly states the standard vegetarian options as well as the dishes that can be customized to suit vegetarian dietary needs. I find this a good practice so that one does not need to separately inquire each time.

We were in the mood for pizza and promptly ordered the 10″ ‘Garden Special’ from the menu. The pizza is crisp and slightly charred in the bottom and with gooey cheese on the top. There are a generous amount of toppings of fresh ingredients and we really enjoyed the pizza. The Garden Special contains tomatoes, olives, bell peppers, mushrooms and onions as toppings. The pizza size is substantial, so if your ordering one 14″ pizza, it is more than sufficient for 2 pax else go for two 10″ pizzas to have some variety in the order. They have a pizza stand to place the pizza which makes it convenient for service.

In Italian food, the thrill is to get a perfect pasta. Even if it is a simple ‘Aglio Olio’. The pasta was well-done, drizzled with olive oil and topped off with basil and sundried tomatoes. To add to this, it was well-seasoned. This pasta bursts with flavor and I really enjoyed it.

They need to work on their service staff being more responsive and aware of the restaurant promos. If the common issues in the starting phase are smoothed and with good Italian casual dining ambiance and food in place, Yellow Cab Co. is a nice place to unwind and also works for takeaways. Wishing all the readers a very Happy Chinese New Year! Gong Xi Fa Cai!

Delicius Pasticceria – Lau Pa Sat

Its been quite a while since the extremely popular Lau Pa Sat got refurbished. It now has a lot of stalls offering a variety of cuisines to office-goers in the area. When I was roaming this area post-dinner, I spotted a well-lit cafe that had a very enticing cake display counter which was visible from the road. That’s how I landed at Delicius Pasticceria, a cafe serving interesting pastries. It originates from Osaka, Japan. After glancing through the pastries, their names sounded on the French-Japanese side. But what surprised me the most was the affordable prices in this central area of town!

Chocolate lovers should not miss the delicious ‘Chocolate Raspberry’ cake. The tangy raspberry taste cuts through the moist chocolate and gives a refreshing feel. Their plating was quite neat and artistic. It definitely added a visual flair.

For those who prefer not to taste berries in their desserts, they have an option with the ‘Caramel Chocolate’ cake. It looked like a mousse cake but had a firmer texture. Have a bite with the cream served on the side for an enhanced taste.

And for the exclusive chocolate lovers, there is the ‘Chocolate Cake’. Well, this could definitely have been better in terms of texture and taste. Since I have tasted quite a few chocolate cakes around Singapore, my standards are higher in this regard.

We also decided to try one of the many fruity offerings they had on display. We chose the ‘Green Apple Tart’ as we found it to be unique. It was quite tangy and the green apple presence was quite strong. So you will have to pace your dessert and savour the taste. Other than that, it was interesting to try as a different option.

Apart from these options, their fig tarts, apple cheesecakes and matcha soft serves are supposed to be pretty good which I plan to try next time. They also have cookies and candies that you can buy off-the-shelf. For their really unique offerings, for the price point and for their continuous change in variety of cakes, Delicius Pasticcerie is highly recommended.

Hombre Cantina [Permanently Closed]

Hola Amigos!!! Yes, that’s how I send each of you best wishes for the new year. This year began with a visit to a Mexican joint. The Mexican wave has swept across Singapore in a big way – and its giving us more places to visit! One of the new entrants in the scene is Hombre Cantina situated along Boat Quay. It fits the bill for a casual outing. We headed there for dinner and it felt like a Mexican joint, thanks to the decor. Wood-panelled walls, Spanish hats hung across nails, interesting pictures adorn the restaurant space which added to the appeal.

The rooster literally rules the roost at this joint. Right from the restaurant name, to the table tops to the “rules” – the rooster is present everywhere. This is a DIY burrito place which also seems to be a growing trend. The rules were clearly described as can be seen from the image.

To begin with, we went for the healthy serving of ‘Rice Bowl’. This is basically a burrito without the tortilla served in a bowl. The vegetables were fresh and crunchy and blended well with the rice. The guacamole could have been much better as the real taste of avocado and lime was missing.

When I was going through their drinks menu, I saw that they had featured the traditional Mexican drink called ‘Horchata’. This is basically a rice-based drink with almonds and has a creamy texture on the whole. If you do not have an appetite for tasting something totally different, then stick to standard choices. I wanted to taste something unique and found it quite OK apart from the fact that it could have been a bit cooler.

We also went for the usual ‘Vegetarian Burrito’ which was quite filling. I took black beans, pico de gallo, guacamole and medium spice salsa as the components while making my burrito. The tortilla had dried and was a bit difficult to munch but otherwise the taste was quite good. This is priced at $15 excluding the guacamole which comes as an additional topping at $2. Lime infused water is provided (self-service). They also have margaritas and lunch offerings as per the time of the day. In the evenings, there is a gentle breeze which kept us cool and helped us enjoy the meal. The serving staff were friendly and attended to us promptly. On the whole, Hombre Cantina has the potential to garner attention with respect to its location, menu offerings and combo deals, provided it gets the taste on the key ingredients on its menu offerings right. For now, wishing each of you a very Happy New Year and adios.

Communal [Permanently Closed]

North Canal Road is a place where the whole street is stacked with restaurants offering varied cuisines. I made my way to Communal for dinner – a casual American diner situated in Raffles Place. It has striking black marble steps at the entrance which lead into a brick long bar counter and some cozy booths. The place has limited seating and reservations are highly recommended. There are long bar-style seats on the pavement outside, but it can get humid as the meal progresses. The smoke around can disturb you a bit if you are sensitive.

The Orders
The menu encompasses everything – right from soups and salads to mains and desserts. They have an interesting set of salads and I went for the ‘Salad of Butter Lettuce’ which had a combination of beets and hazelnuts. The salad was well balanced as well had great texture and bite. It was a healthy start to the meal. We then ordered the ‘Vegetarian Sandwich’ stuffed with veggies and had fries as the side. The sandwich was well made and each bite was packed with flavor. The ‘Communal Burger Deluxe (C.B.D)’ is also highly recommended.

I got lucky and was able to try the ‘Vegetarian Pasta’ which was their ‘Special of the Day’. It was home-made pasta, which added to the taste and the sauce was clean and bright. It was also very visually appealing.

Unfortunately I could not try their desserts, but their milkshakes seemed interesting. On the whole, there is definitely more potential to the place in terms of food offerings. Placing of fans on the outside for ventilation would help. The serving staff were very friendly. They have wallet-friendly Happy Hours in the evening from 7 -8 pm and offer lunch sets. The freedom to try different cuisines and yet stick to one’s roots of being vegetarian or drawing parallels between similar dishes from different cuisines adds another dimension from a foodie’s perspective.
