Happy Life Vegetarian Restaurant

To begin with, here’s wishing all the readers of this blog a very Happy New Year. Work, travel and the holiday mood have kept me busy, but it’s a nice feeling to write a post today. I have missed writing – so here I am with a restaurant review. Singapore has a lot of small food establishments and I came across one such place serving only vegetarian food that opened on the New Year’s Day. They had a flat 20% discount on all items that day which was a nice promo offer. Opened in the Geylang area is this simple and clean place called Happy Life Vegetarian which was filled with colourful bouquets on its opening day. It had a LCD TV hung on the wall which was playing Channel 5. When you order, you are given a token and when your order is ready, your token number flashes on the electronic display. You can then go and pick your food. For a small place, that really caught my attention. Since we had gone for a late lunch, some of the items on the menu were no longer available.

The Orders
We tried the spring rolls for starters. They were OK and barely warm. I would have liked them to be more crisp and warm. They also serve yam rolls but those had gotten over.

For the mains, our order was ‘Veg Laksa’ which was quite flavorful. You can choose to have the Laska with a choice of noodles. The quality of the stock was good, but overall it was slightly under seasoned. I would have also liked more vegetables / tofu in it.

We also tried the ‘Veg Brown Rice Set’ which came with rice, beans, a soya based “salted fish”, eggplant, and a cucumber salad. All the vegetables were well-seasoned. The eggplant was nicely roasted and the beans acted as a worthy green component in the dish. The highlight for me was the cucumber and mango salad tossed with some peanuts which was absolutely delicious in this set.

Our entire meal cost us $7 (with 20% off included). For me, something new is always worth encouraging. Its nice to have vegetarian places spring up in the neighborhood which just adds to more eating options. And when they are affordable, one is even more deelighted. If you have time, go check them out and have a happy meal 🙂
