Sufood

I have completed 50 posts on this blog and its been very interesting to write about recipes and restaurant reviews. A big Thank You to all of you who take time to read my posts – I really appreciate it. That being said – there’s another review! I came across the opening of a Taiwanese vegetarian restaurant starting their first Singapore outlet. That got my immediate attention. So we headed over to Sufood situated in Raffles City which has Italian inspired meat-free offerings that were quite unique. Their set menu is priced at $25++ for a eight-course meal which is quite a steal considering their location, portion sizes, decor and the overall experience. This post will be a bit lengthy as I will be writing on the eight courses but completion of fifty posts calls for a celebration and sharing information about good food is always a pleasure.

The Orders
For the first course, we were served the ‘SUFOOD appetizer’ which was unique in its taste and appearance. It was a trio of poached Japanese yuca root drizzled with a blueberry coulis, a stack of oriental, white water snowflake greens and a savoury cherry tomato jelly. We were asked to go from right to left. There was a stark difference in taste and texture between the starters. My favourite was the tomato jelly.

For the bread course, we were served some ‘Rosemary breadsticks’ paired with a dip. There is a choice between mustard and blueberry flavours and both the dips were nice but I preferred the former. We were also served a welcome drink along with it which had a plum-like taste.

We moved next to salads. We decided to go for one vegetable and one fruit option so that there would be some variation. Our orders were ‘Tropical fruit salad’ and ‘Mushroom Salad’. The fruit salad was a nice medley of seasonal fruits while the mushroom salad was served with broccoli and cherry tomatoes in a vinegar dressing. This salad was served in a differently shaped serving plate which was interesting.

The food is definitely inclined more on the healthy side on the whole. Next up was the soup course. We went for the ‘Cream of Pumpkin Soup’ and ‘Mushroom and Pea pottage’ soups. The soups severely lacked seasoning and were quite bland.

And after eating all this, we realized that we had yet not reached the main course. It is totally advisable to work up your appetite if you intend to try the eight-course meal. Of course, any of these items can be ordered a la carte too. I ordered the ‘Vegetable Pita Pockets’ which was extremely delicious. It basically consisted of mushroom, pepper and broccoli baked in a zesty Arrabbiata jalapeño sauce. Each pita pocket can be filled with this sauce and every bite was enjoyable. And what’s more – they serve plastic gloves to be used while filling so that you don’t find it messy!!

The other mains that we tried were the ‘Conchiglie Mushroom Bake’ and ‘Macaroni Alfredo Casserole’. The portion size of these dishes was quite large and it is up to us as to how we pace through our meal. The mushroom bake is pasta cooked in a curry sauce along with cheddar cheese. The sauce reminded me of the flavour that you get in Maggi curry noodles. The macaroni dish consisted of mushrooms and broccoli cooked in creamy sauce with parmesan cheese and cherry tomatoes as the topping. Both these dishes are quite filling.

The desserts and drinks are the last two courses and are served together. There are interesting combinations that we tried in this course. To begin with we ordered ‘Banana cheesecake’ along with ‘Tropical Drink’. The cheesecake could have been better but the drink was good.

We also tried the ‘Sesame Panna Cotta’ with ‘Very Berry’. The black sesame seed puree was a twist and was unique in terms of the usual panna cotta flavours. The drink was refreshing and I could taste the blackcurrants.

Our final dessert selection was ‘Osmanthus flower jelly’ with ‘Ashitaba’ because of their unique names. The former is a maple syrup jelly infused with Osmanthus flowers which was refreshing while the latter is a drink which is a blend of Ashitaba leaves, aloe vera and honey. This course was definitely unique as we were trying some of these items for the first time.

Most of their dishes have mushrooms and cheese which is why the dessert course came as a welcome change. The service staff is extremely helpful and always check in between meals to ensure that you are having a good time. They also enquire on any dietary restrictions and suggest dishes accordingly. For their large size portions, for their variety, for quality customer service, for the price point, for unique food offerings and for the ambiance, Sufood is definitely recommended.
