Yantra Restaurant – Cream Centre Festival

The announcement of Cream Center specialties coming to Singapore was made by Yantra almost a month ago. The dishes will be available at Yantra, Tanglin Mall from 5th – 22nd Sept ’13 between 11.30 am – 4.30 pm. Prior reservation at Yantra is highly recommended as this event is quite popular and walk-in seats are not easily available. Cream Center is a popular vegetarian restaurant in India and its signature dishes are delicious and so I made my way to Yantra to begin my nostalgic trip.

The Orders

We first ordered ‘Channa Bhatura’ which stayed true to the original terms of the puffed and over sized bhatura teamed with a dark and well-seasoned channa which was enriched by the addition of potatoes. The bhatura disappeared from the plate in no time! Special mention needs to be made of the tableware used – the channa was served in a beautiful tear-drop shaped vessel.

The taste buds then started craving for traditional paranthas which are available in three types: Aloo, Aloo Methi and Paneer. We ordered the ‘Aloo Methi Paratha’ which was evenly and generously stuffed with the vegetable filling. This parantha had a slight bitter taste because of the methi (Fenugreek). If you dislike bitter tastes, try one of the other options. Personally, I enjoyed the combination.

We hadn’t eaten sizzlers since quite some time and seeing them on the menu was a welcome sight. It’s quite filling and a sizable portion for two. This is available in two varieties: Paneer and the non-paneer version. We went for the ‘Aloo Tikki Sizzler’ which has a nice combination of rice and gravy along with tikki, greens, carrots, peas and fries and is best eaten hot.

Such satiating meals should deservedly end on a sweet note. The ‘Sizzling Chocolate Brownie’ was mouthwatering to say the least. When the chocolate sauce is poured in the hot pan, an amazing aroma of warm chocolate envelops you. This is a trademark Cream Center styled offering and it just makes you want to devour the dessert. It is a sizable portion for two people and I’d suggest you share the dessert.

Also from past experience, I can say that chaat items are also really good at this franchise, especially the ‘Bambaiya Ragda Chaat’ which is authentic Mumbai style. There are also refreshing ice sodas as drink offerings to beat the humidity. On the whole, for the trip down memory lane, for the rustic Punjabi offerings and the ambiance – this festival is totally worth a try.
